Alessandro RIDOLFO

Associate Professor of Physics of matter [FIS/03]

Alessandro Ridolfo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Ettore Majorana” (DFA) of the University of Catania since October 2018. He graduated in Physics at University of Messina in 2008, and there he got the PhD in Physics in 2011. Prof. Ridolfo is an expert of non-perturbative light-matter interaction and open quantum systems. He performs his research activities at  DFA in the “Theoretical Condensed Matter & Quantum Technologies group”, and he is actively collaborating with many research groups at University of Messina (Italy), University of Southampton (United Kingdom), and RIKEN (Japan). His scientific output is very well covered and known in the scientific community, and often published on high impact factor journals.

The main recent research activities have been devoted to theoretical aspects of light-matter interaction in solid-state systems, with particular respect to the their open quantum dynamics. Professor Ridolfo has theoretically studied the ultrastrong light-matter interaction regime, i.e. when the coupling energy is comparable or larger than the bare frequency of the uncoupled light and matter excitations, developing a master equation approach and a general photodetection formalism based on the input-output relations, that is valid for arbitrary coupling rate. The developed formalism enables the calculations of general normal-order correlation functions, the essential tool for quantifying photonics quantum correlations, in systems displaying ultrastrong coupling. This formalism paved the route to the theoretical investigation of a plenty of open quantum systems as in circuit-QED, cavity-QED, optomechanics and quantum plasmonics. Namely, as first example, in the paper “Photon Blockade in the Ultrastrong Coupling Regime” Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 193602 (2012), it was shown how under coherent excitation, the standard photon blockade scenario has completely different features in the ultrastrong coupling.

Main research interests:

  • cavity and circuit-QED in the strong and ultrastrong coupling regimes.
  • Quantum Optomechanics with non-perturbative light-matter interaction.
  • Quantum Plasmonics: study of the quantum optical properties of quantum-emitters coupled to metallic nanoparticles.
  • Coherent control of open quantum systems.
