Learning Objectives

The course is aimed at providing the student with the basic physical principles of spectroscopy with electromagnetic waves, the technologies used and their potentials and limits. Particular attention will be paid to the practical use in the characterization of materials in the solid phase and of thin multi-layers structures.

The student will acquire the basic knowledge to use spectroscopic characterization techniques and to assess the response they provide.

The student is expected to critically assess the applicability of the specific techniques learned during the course and to extract basic information from the visual analysis of the spectra and eventually to suggest improvements or other supporting spectroscopies.

Capability of explanation to non-experts which kind of information can be gained, on what kind of samples and why.

Capability of understanding the principles and applicability of new or improved spectroscopic techniques
