Single Photon Avalanche Detectors and Silicon Photomultipliers for Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy of Human Brain Cortex

Giorno 4 dicembre 2019, alle ore 15:30, presso l'Aula A del DFA (da confermare), il Dott. Salvatore Lombardo (IMM-CNR, Catania) terrà un seminario dal titolo Single Photon Avalanche Detectors and Silicon Photomultipliers for Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy of Human Brain Cortex.

Il seminario appartiene al ciclo Highlights in Frontier Physics ed è esplicitamente rivolto ai Dottorandi del PhD Course in Physics. Tutti gli interessati sono tuttavia invitati a partecipare.

Abstract. In this talk we discuss the physical operation and the characteristics of single photon avalanche detectors (SPADs) and of a particular class of SPAD arrays, the silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). We review the various types of device designs and the main performances. We then focus on a particular application of SPADs and SiPMs: the functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and imaging (NIRI) of the human brain cortex. We briefly describe basic physics aspects related to the NIRS systems and their applications to medical bioimaging.
