Scientific publishing: how to write for high-impact factor journals

Abstract. Upon the kind invitation to present at the PhD school organized by the University of Catania, this seminar will offer an in-depth exploration of the peer-review process within the Advanced journals at Wiley, with the aim of demystifying the stages and practices involved in publishing high-quality research. After a brief overview of the journal portfolio and publication opportunities in materials science and physics, participants will gain insights into the critical steps that submissions undergo, along with an outline of best practices to ensure rigorous and transparent evaluation. The session will also address common challenges and ethical considerations in peer review, highlighting Wiley’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and impact of scholarly work within the scientific community. As conclusive remarks, given Wiley’s pioneering and leading role in promoting the transition to the Open Access (OA) publication model and in embracing the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools, special emphasis will be placed on these topics.
Bio. Gaia Tomasello received her Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry at the University of Bologna. She carried out postdoctoral research as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the department of Physics at Freie Universität (Berlin) in the field of excited state dynamics and then pursuing further her research activity at the Polytechnique Montréal studying the properties of conducting polymers for applications in nano- and bioelectronics. She joined Wiley in 2019 as peer review editor and works currently as Editor in Chief of the journal Advanced Electronic Materials and Deputy Editor of the journal the Physica Status Solidi A within the Department of Publishing Development under the Materials Science and Physics division with the office based in Berlin, Germany.
