Abstract:

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) governs the strong interactions between quarks and gluons, giving rise to complex behaviors under extreme conditions. The QCD phase diagram provides a theoretical framework for understanding the various phases of nuclear and quark matter, from the quark-gluon plasma at high temperatures to hadronic matter at lower densities. This seminar will focus on the theoretical aspects of the QCD phase diagram, highlighting critical points, phase transitions, and recent progress in lattice QCD calculations. We will explore how these insights contribute to our understanding of the fundamental structure of matter in the universe.

Bio:
Marco Ruggieri got his PhD in Bari University, working on a thesis on color superconductivity. He then was appointed as a postdoctoral researcher in Bari University, where he spent four years working on the dense as well as the hot regions of the QCD phase diagram. After that, he went to Kyoto University for two years as a JSPS fellow, where he worked on the chiral magnetic effect and on the effects of strong magnetic fields on the QCD phase structure. He was then appointed as a postdoctoral researcher in Catania University, where he worked four years under the supervision of Prof. Greco working on the early stage of high-energy nuclear collisions (Glasma). He then moved to UCAS in Beijing as a postdoc where he kept working on Glasma. After two years he moved to Lanzhou University, where he spent five years as a professor in the Nuclear Science and Technology department. In October 2022 he was appointed as associate professor at UniCT. His scientific interests are statistical simulations of Yang-Mills fields for high-energy nuclear collisions, exotic phases of superdense QCD, with some minor interest in stochastic processes with memory. Besides physics, he is a well-known estimator of Progressive Metal (in particular, he admires the band Dream Theater and their guitar player John Petrucci), as well as a solid supporter of Football Club Internazionale Milano.
