Marco RUGGIERI

Associate Professor of Theoretical physics, mathematical models and methods [FIS/02]

Master Degree in Physics, score 110/110 cum laude on July 2001 and PhD in Physics on March 2005 at Bari University with a thesis on color superconductivity. From 2005 to 2009 he was a postdoc at Bari University. From 2009 to 2011 he was a postdoc at Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Japan. From 2011 to 2015 he was postdoc at Catania University. From 2015 to 2017 he was postdoc at University of the Chinese Academy of Science, Pechino, Cina. From 2017 to 2022 he was full professor at School of Nuclear Science and Technology, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, Cina. Currently he is associate professor at Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia “E. Majorana”  in Catania University.

He thought Classical Electrodynamics and Quantum Field Theory for several years in Lanzhou University, and gave lectures on the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and heavy ion collisions. He attended numerous international conferences on theoretical high energy physics and QCD, and visited many international institutes for giving seminars. He was principal investigator for three research grants, including one prestigious founded by the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) named "Mapping the QCD phase diagram by high energy nuclear collisions" in 2018 - 2022. He was supervisor of several undergraduate, master and PhD students. He is internationally known for his works on the phase transitions in QCD at finite density and/or finite temperature, as well as in presence of external fields, for his works on the initial conditions of relativistic nuclear collisions and more recently for his works on heavy quarks in the early stages of high energy nuclear collisions, as well as of stochastic processes with memory.

Abstract of PhD thesis
In this PhD thesis I summarize my work about Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at high density and low temperature. In these particular conditions of temperature and density deconfinement is expected to occur, and because of the attractive interaction among quarks in the antisymmetric color channel, normal Fermi spheres are expected to be replaced by a superconductive state of Cooper pairs. My work has focused on discovery and study of instabilities in superconducting quark matter, and on the study of inhomogeneous color superconductivity and its implications for the physics of compact stellar objects.
