Research Interests

Solar flares: precursors, magnetic energy storage, magnetic field configuration, multi-wavelength analysis, correlation with CMEs. Emergence and evolution of active regions: high resolution spectropolarimetric observations of emerging flux, interaction between the emerging flux and the ambient magnetic field, moving magnetic features. Space Weather: impact of CMEs on the circum-terrestrial environment. Principal supervisor of 13 graduated PhD students.

L'attività di ricerca della Prof.ssa Francesca Zuccarello riguarda lo studio dei fenomeni magnetici che avvengono nell’atmosfera solare e le interazioni del plasma magnetizzato con l’ambiente circumterrestre. Queste attività si sono esplicate nella partecipazione ad importanti progetti ed esperimenti, condotti da grandi collaborazioni internazionali:

  1. Fisica solare: progetto EUROPEAN SOLAR TELESCOPE (EST), che prevede la realizzazione del più grande telescopio solare europeo (specchio primario di 4 metri) nelle Isole Canarie
  2. Fisica dei raggi cosmici: esperimento Auger presso l' Osservatorio Pierre Auger a Malargüe, provincia di Mendoza, Argentina
  3. Emissione UV: esperimento Mini-Euso nell'ambito del progetto JEM-EUSO
Guida alle tesi di laurea

Prof. Zuccarello can provide guidance during the writing of the Bachelor in Physics thesis and of the MSc in Physics Thesis on the following topics concerning Solar Physics and Sun-Earth interactions.


Bachelor Thesis:

  • Magnetic phenomena in the solar atmosphere
  • Eruptive events in the Sun and related Space Weather phenomena

MSc in Physics Thesis:

  • Initial phases of solar active region formation and investigation of plasma – magnetic field interaction
  • Observation and analysis of spectral and spectropolarimetric data acquired by space-borne and ground based facilities, to study the magnetic field evolution in the solar atmosphere, the photospheric dynamics, and current instabilities in flaring regions
  • Moving Magnetic Features evolution: comparison between observations and simulations
  • Investigation of pre-flare and flare mechanisms through the analysis of ground-based and satellite observations
  • Analysis of visible range, UV and EUV spectral and spectropolarimetric data to investigate the occurrence of magnetic reconnection during solar energetic phenomena and to define new magnetic activity indices of solar active regions
  • EUV and coronographic observations of the solar corona aimed to the study of precursors of CMEs
  • Comprehensive analysis of solar eruptive events from the Sun to the Earth.
