Rosaria GRASSO

Fixed-term Assistant Professor (RTDA) of Applied physics [FIS/07]

(Last update: 04 June 2019)

She got her PhD with “laude” in physical engineering in 2009 at Catania University. She is now researcher in Applied Physics with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Catania. In the framework of national and international collaboration, she works on detection of ultra-weak and photo-induced optical emission from biological systems and on the study, design and testing of detectors for time resolved imaging with single-photon sensitivity. She is also investigating the non-thermal effect induced by radio frequency electromagnetic fields on cell cultures.

(Last update: 21 August 2019)

Summary of the main research lines performed from 2006

- Study of the interaction of light (UVA and visible) with biological systems using the phenomenon known as Delayed Luminescence (DL). In the description of biological systems, the hierarchically nested architectures are particularly important. In them collective properties emerge, depending on the level of complexity. Among the techniques able to favor the study of structures and the transmission of non-chemical information between the various parts of biological systems, those based on photonics such as Delayed Luminescence stand out. The DL is a photo-induced, ultra-weak emission of optical photons . Its time trend extends from a few microseconds to several seconds after turning off the excitation source. It is a sensible indicator of the analyzed system status. In particular the researches concerned:

  • development of a theoretical model able to explain the DL emission process from biological systems having elementary structures organized up to macroscopic levels, such as polypeptide chains and polymeric structures (homopolymers and copolymers);
  • study of the correlation between DL emission and water structure;
  • research of the origin of the DL emission in complex cellular systems (cell cultures and animal tissues derived from explants) and correlation of the variation of the emission with the alterations induced in the biological systems by xenobiotic agents and hadronic treatments, with particular regard to the possible application fallouts in medical and pharmacological field;
  • application of the Legislative Decree to the assessment of water pollution from heavy metals and, in the agro-food sector, to the evaluation of the degree of germination of the seeds following natural deterioration or damage caused by ion beams;
  • technological research on prototypes of single-photon detectors for acquisition of images resolved in time as well as fine-tuning and optimization of detection systems in single-photon use for acquisitions resolved in time.

Other research lines:

- study of non-thermal effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in primary neocortical astroglial cultures and stem neural cells;

- study of the interaction of ion beams with plant systems (seeds and cuttings) in order to enhance biological diversity.
