Master in Quantum Science and Technologies
A Master in Quantum Science and Technologies (Scienze e Tecnologie Quantistiche) will be activated in the academic year 2024/25 at the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Ettore Majorana” of the University of Catania. The Master is organized within the activities of the Partenariato Esteso National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI), whose spoke 9 Education and Outreach is coordinated by UniCT.
The Master plans to provide a bridge between the university and industries, with the aim of attracting and educating young and talented company employees, and of creating a Quantum ecosystem in Italy, particularly in Southern Italy.
The highly interdisciplinary study plan will also involve the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI) and the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Science Engineering (DIEEI).
Training also includes partnerships with national and international companies, and a 4-months stage in one of the partner companies. Stages will take place in parallel with training, which includes courses in quantum computing, quantum communications, Artificial Intelligence and quantum machine learning, quantum networking and cybersecurity, quantum sensing etc. Both courses and training will focus on projects aimed at the development and application of specific quantum technologies for the industry.
The Master is coherent with the topics in the theoretical Condensed Matter Physics curriculum within the MSc programme in Physics, as well as with the curriculum in Theoretical physics of fundamental interactions and quantum technologies within the PhD programme in Physics, both available at DFA since more than a decade. At DMI and DIEEI there are courses available, compatible with the Master's topics.
The duration of the Master is of one year, and it is equivalent to 60 CFU (ECTS). The allotted number of participants will range between 10 and 20. The didactic activity will take place in both semesters, for a total of approximately 10 months. At the end of the study and training period, and after the completion of a final test, the participants will achieve the academic title of University Master of 2nd level in Quantum Science and Technology.
Didactic activities will start on 3/3/2025. The final exam will take place on 26/2/2026.
