The PhD

Coordinator: Livio LAMIA
Deputy Coordinator: Alessandro RIDOLFO
Duration: 3 years

The Department of Physics and Astronomy "Ettore Majorana" selects Italian and foreign students with a Master's Degree for admission to the PhD course in Physics. The aim of the Ph.D. in Physics is to train young people, with a solid and extensive basic preparation and experts in advanced fields of Physics and its applications, to be included in cutting-edge research activities at Universities, Research Centers, Public Bodies, private entities and also in advanced production sectors.

Course Overview and Educational Aims

The primary objective of the PhD course is therefore to develop and obtain a critical capacity that allows them to face and solve open problems (research in fundamental and applied physics, problems of interest to industry, etc.) with a correct scientific approach. To this end, various paths with specific profiles and educational objectives are activated, from those related to basic research, both experimental and theoretical (in nuclear and subnuclear physics, theoretical physics of fundamental interactions and quantum technologies, nuclear and particle astrophysics) to those of more applicative interest (applied physics).

Job Opportunities

The employment and professional opportunities range from those most mainly related to basic and applied research activities in the academic field (post-doctoral positions in Italian and foreign universities and in Italian and international research institutions, which mark the beginning of the cursus honorum towards permanent positions) to research in Italian and multinational industries. Further opportunities include positions of the highest technological level in university laboratories and research institutions, responsible for the operation and updating of the complex machines that allow the achievement of scientific results. In addition, all those occupations in which the solution of complex problems is of central importance, are within the reach of PhDs in physics.
