Particle or wave?

At a meeting of the British Science Association in Glasgow, 1928, Sir William Bragg stated that he accepted the wave theory on odd days of the week and the particle theory on even days. Wave-particle dualism, later formalized by Louis, prince de Broglie, is one of the tenet of Quantum theory, to be observed at any energy scale in both fundamental and applied physics of matter, both condensed and nuclear, or subnuclear. One usually attributes a mass to a particle, and energy to a wave. Einstein's Theory of relatively equates them both through his celebrated equation E = m c2, which is an icon of modern science. These ideas are at the core of the graphical concept on which the new logo of the Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia "Ettore Majorana" #DFA is based. The new logo has been designed by Stefania Pasquale and unanimously approved by the Council of the Department on February 19, 2019. The shape of a sphere and the wave traversing it are also archetypes of the very Universe. They are at the basis of the first astrophysical observations and cosmological theories. Too many and difficult concepts in a such a simple and catchy picture? Hopefully not, as the new logo will identify the #DFA in any official event and through its many web and social channels, starting from today.
